Issue #26, January 2011 |
It’s been a tough last couple of weeks but the Australian spirit is shining through. Our thoughts are with friends and family of those who have sadly lost their lives, homes and personal belongings in the recent QLD floods. The recovery of our state is in full swing as we see the suburbs affected one by one emerge from the carnage and move forward towards what we hope to be a bigger and better 2011. For IT Associates response to the qld floods please click here Technology plays a huge part in small businesses day to day running and IT Associates would like to offer our services free to help get businesses directly affected by the floods back up and running as soon as possible. IT Associates and the World's Greatest Shave
Over the recent year, IT Associates has been forminga close association with the Leukaemia Foundation, as a result, we have been chosen as one of their ICT ambassadors for 2011. Every hour, someone in Australia is diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma. In an attempt to support these patients, thousands of people shave, colour and wax their hair to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundations “World’s Greatest Shave”. The money raised by this foundation is used to fund services to support patients and families living with these unfortunate disorders. If our Technicians turn up on site after Monday the 13th March with shaved heads or brightly coloured hair, please don’t be alarmed, this just means we have succeeded in our appeal to support the World’s Greatest Shave! If you would like to show your support and sponsor the IT Associates team please click here. If you would like to make your own team or find out different ways to get involved and support this worthy cause please click here.

Brain: 25th anniversary of the first personal computer virus
On the 19th of January 2011, The ‘Brain’ virus turned 25 years old. The virus, developed by two brothers in Pakistan, was formed to catch out software pirates. As it turned out, these men created one of the greatest annoyances in the modern world. The brothers told TIME magazine they had written it to protect their medical software from piracy and it was supposed to target copyright infringers only. The virus spread rapidly across the world infecting one floppy disk at a time. Brain would bury itself in the part of the disk necessary for running programs and infect any computer it was inserted into. It would then sit in the computer's memory and infect new disks inserted into that machine as well. Although this virus is long gone, many new viruses threaten to attack our systems daily. If you are concerned about the protection of your technology call IT Associates today for advice on data protection and virus avoidance.
